The Naples Cathedral, the main church of Naples, has an overpowering Neo-Gothic facade with three entrances. Its walls, interiors and other ecclesiastical items hold great artistic, historic and cultural importance. It is an architectural marvel boasting Gothic and Baroque styles as well.
One can admire the gorgeous frescoes, intricate bronze railings, opulent altars, and numerous sculptures and paintings by various renowned Italian artists. Crossing any of them brings you to the three naves each over 100 metres long and 48 metres high. Various other styles such as Gothic, Baroque can also be seen and add to its arresting appeal. It was constructed between 1299 to 1314 and is the main church of Naples.
One of the most intriguing items on show includes the vial of the blood of Saint Januarius, to whom the cathedral is dedicated. There is this belief that on some festivities the saint’s blood turns from solid to liquid.
