Situated atop Vomero Hill within the historic Certosa di San Martino—a former Carthusian monastery, National Museum of San Martino provides visitors with panoramic views of Naples and its bay from its gardens. houses an extensive array of paintings and sculptures from the 13th to the 19th centuries and is the renowned Presepe Cuciniello, an elaborate Neapolitan nativity scene comprising over 150 figures and 450 miniature items.
Founded in 1325 under the direction of Charles of Anjou, Duke of Calabria, the Certosa di San Martino was originally a Gothic monastery. Over the centuries, it underwent significant Baroque renovations, notably in the 16th and 17th centuries, which enhanced its architectural splendor. Following the unification of Italy, the monastery was repurposed as a museum in 1866 to preserve and showcase artifacts from Naples and the southern kingdoms.
