The Royal Palace of Naples, located in Piazza del Plebiscito, is a central historical landmark showcasing Renaissance, Baroque, and Neoclassical architecture. Highlights include the grand staircase and royal apartments. It is also known for its extensive collection of tapestries, paintings, and sculptures.
As a former royal residence, the palace offers insights into the lives of Naples' rulers and the city's role in European history. Commissioned in the early 17th century by Spanish Viceroy Fernando Ruiz de Castro, it was designed by architect Domenico Fontana to serve as a residence for Spanish monarchs.
During the Bourbon reign, the palace saw significant enhancements, with opulent additions to its interiors, including elaborate frescoes, grand tapestries, and intricate furniture. The palace also served as the residence for the House of Savoy after Italy's unification in 1861. Beyond its royal connections, it played a pivotal role in the cultural development of Naples, hosting performances and state functions and housing a significant collection of artifacts and manuscripts, some of which are preserved in the National Library of Naples, located within its walls.
