Among Naple’s most symbolic and iconic places of worship, the church of San Domenico Maggiore has an external appearance that may seem quite unwelcoming, but it is perhaps Naples’ most unique and intriguing place of worship located right at the historic city’s centre.
It was built between 1283 and 1324 and holds immense artistic and historical importance. The church was commissioned by Charles I of Anjou and Angevins’ royal church. The interior of the San Domenico Maggiore church lies behind a gorgeous Gothic facade and is adorned opulently with a dramatic altar, tall columns, fine gold details and many paintings and sculptures.
Other important objective information : 1. One can use the metro (Dante, line 1) or the bus (line 184 and R2) to reach the church.
2. You can visit the Naples National Archaeological Museum and Naples Cathedral which lie about 600 metres from the San Domenico Maggiore church.
