The Melrose House Museum is housed in a stately Burgers Park Pretoria mansion. It was used as a military headquarters during the Second Boer War and is where the Peace Treaty of Vereeniging was signed. It still houses the table on which it was signed and has a copy of the treaty.
The building is a testament to the shift from Victorian to Edwardian architectural styles. It is known for its stained glass windows, ornate ceilings and fireplaces, beautiful carpets and paintings by English artists, porcelain ornaments etc. It is a National Heritage Site established towards the end of the 19th century by the businessman George Jesse Heys. Many of these items belonged to the Heys family. Annual antique markets are organised at the house.
