Neratze mosque, also known as the Gazi Hussein Mosque or Moschea Neratze, is located on Titos Petychakis Square in the centre of the old town of Rethymno. It is a rectangular structure famous for its towering minaret with two balconies and three stone domes. Inspired by Renaissance and Ottoman architecture, it now functions solely as a cultural centre and school of music.
It also has a concert hall with mesmerising arched stone walls which hold classical music concerts. Neratze Mosque was originally the Venetian Church of Santa Maria, built-in 1890. It was later converted into a mosque in 1657 under Turkish rule. Goura Gate, Centre for Byzantine Art, Ethnikis Antistaseos Street, and the Fortezza of Rethymnon are in close vicinity.
