The Santorini cable car is one of the most popular attractions. It starts from the old port to the beautiful capital city Fira and vice versa. The view of the beautiful Aegean Sea and the beautifully aligned white and blue hotels, houses, and restaurants are stunning.
The cable car takes 3-4 minutes to cover the 220 meters altitude ascend or descend and can serve up to 1200 people per hour. A cable car can hold up to 6 people and six gondolas cars travel in a line together. This car is built for a swift and easy mode of transportation, unlike the slow and tiring option of climbing 586 steps (that would take 1.5 hours) or using the traditional method of riding a donkey.
Created by a volcanic eruption in 1650 B.C., Gialos, the old port, is nestled almost 200m below Fira. Also known as Fira Skala, it is accessible by cable car, which leaves every 20 minutes. You can also scale almost the steps (approximately 20 minutes) to reach the little port. There are restaurants, small shops, and tavernas at the port.
