Popularly known as the cold desert mountain, "Middle Land" or "Little Tibet", Spiti Valley can be more aptly called as 'Trekking mecca and a virgin paradise'. Nestled in the Himalayan range in Himach (Read More)al Pradesh, this desert terrain is sure to spellbind you. Further inward, ancient monasteries, quaint little habitations, snow-capped mountains, verdure forests, crystal clear rivers and magnificent glaciers make this picture perfect valley all the more enthralling and surreal. The breath-taking views and the untouched natural beauty will make your visit a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

You can combine Chandratal visit with Hampta Pass or Spiti Tour that is the best way to see this real gem hidden in the barren area of Lahaul and Spiti.

If yoi are an Ace Driver with decent driving experience in Mountainous terrains, take The Hindustan Tibet Highway from Shimla. Under no circumstances though, try to cover the distance from Shimla to (Read More)Spiti in a day(practically impossible) as you have to acclimatize your body with the changing altitude.
Regular route should be:-
Shimla-Kalpa/Reckong Peo (Day 1)
Reckong Peo to Tabo (Day 2)
Tabo to Kaza (Day 3. Dhankar Lake & Monastery can be done enroute)
Kaza(2/3 days)
Kaza to Chandratal Lake/Manali
I went to manali in august and I was offered a ride to chandratal lake for about 6000 for a small car. I didn't have the time travel to spiti so never inquired much but I think that would have been f (Read More)or to and fro ride.
AMS is pretty random. It may strike a perfectly healthy person and it may have no effect on an unhealthy person. It's both physiological and psychological.
In case of kids though, it is a near certai (Read More)nity. Its nothing to panic though, as long as your kid is communicating with you in case of any uncomfort he is facing and he is having a healthy diet of carbohydrates and proteins (Diet in Mountains should comprise mostly of carbohydrates and proteins). Also, don't forcibly feed or ask your kid to consume water even when he/she is unwilling to. Only when required. Trust me, frequent water at altitudes of 12000 ft and above has bigger complications than benefits. A better option is keep a bottle filled wid garlic water. It is a good remedy to fight AMS (kids & adults), much better than adults.
Also while being on the road, try to not make your kid sleep in a horizontal position, let Him/Her sleep upright.
Any more you want to know or any information you want regarding AMS, acclimatization and Himalayas, always ready to help.
There is not a severe breathing problem in Spiti Valley so you would not face any difficulty travelling there. However, it is advisable to consult a doctor regarding the risk to the child.

The route via Shimla-Reckong peo is open throughout the year and is preferred by bikers over the Manali-Spiti route because
1. AMS is possible via Manali route because of sudden change of altitude. (Read More)The Shimla-Spiti route provides gradual ascent.
2. You can skip Rohtang Pass which generally has traffic.
3. Limited time(June to September) to travel to Spiti via Manali.
4. The beautiful Hindustan -Tibet highway which is an adventure in itself.
