Ponts Couverts, Strasbourg Overview

Covered Bridges are a set of three bridges spanning four channels of the River Ill in Strasbourg's historic Petite France district. Visitors can stroll across the bridges, admire the imposing towers, and enjoy picturesque views of the surrounding canals and timber-framed houses characteristic of the Petite France quarter. The site offers numerous photo opportunities, especially from the nearby Barrage Vauban, a 17th-century weir and bridge that provides a panoramic vantage point of the area.

Constructed in the 13th century, these bridges were originally topped with wooden roofs to shield defenders during conflicts. Although the roofs were removed in 1784, the name "Covered Bridges" has endured. Each bridge is accompanied by a massive stone tower, remnants of the city's medieval fortifications. These towers, dating back to the 14th century, once formed part of Strasbourg's defensive walls, underscoring the city's strategic importance during the Middle Ages
