Jembatan in the Indonesian language means Bridge and thus, Jembatan Suramadu means the Surabaya-Madura Bridge. The Bridge has been categorised as a national bridge and spans to a total length of 5.4 km. It looks very scenic at night with the dark sky and the bright lamps. The Surabaya-Madura Bridge was constructed by a consortium of some top Indonesian companies.
It was the first Indonesian bridge to cross the Madura Strait, Jembatan Suramadu was opened in 2009. Financial controversies and safety issues during the construction period halted progress and construction had begun in 2003.
