Metekhi Virgin Mary Assumption Church, Tbilisi Overview
The Metekhi Virgin Mary Assumption Church is a historic Orthodox church located on the elevated cliff of the Metekhi rock. It overlooks the Kura River and you can get a panoramic view of Tbilisi from the church. Originally said to have been built in the 5th century, the church has undergone several reconstructions and renovations over the centuries.
However, the majority of its current structure was constructed between 1278 and 1289 AD during the rule of King Demetrius II of Georgia. It reflects a blend of architectural styles, including Georgian, Persian, and Russian influences.
