Masca Walk, Tenerife Overview
The Masca Gorge Trail is a breathtaking hiking route located in the northwest of the island within the Teno Rural Park. This dramatic trail descends from the picturesque village of Masca through a steep gorge, surrounded by towering cliffs and lush vegetation, leading to a remote beach. Known for its challenging terrain and stunning views, the trail is approximately 7 kilometers round trip and takes 3-4 hours each way. Due to safety regulations, prior booking is required, and the trail is best suited for experienced hikers with proper equipment.
The Masca Gorge Trail connects the tiny hamlet of Masca to a black volcanic sand beach, popularly known as Masca Beach. This is a steep hike as the trail is filled with uneven volcanic rocks. The course is average to follow and it takes about 3-4 hours to get to the beach. It is mandatory to be physically fit to go on this hike as returning to the village through the ravine takes much longer. The number of visitors allowed to this hike is limited. This trail offers an amazing experience to all adventure lovers, but it requires meticulous planning.
Must Know Before You Visit Masca Walk
How to reach Masca : The easiest way to reach is by taking the 355 (Santiago del Teide) or 365 (Buenavista del Norte) bus route. Even though parking options are very limited, you can drive up to Masca keeping in mind the narrow, winding road. Taking a taxi is also a good option, however, walking to Masca should be avoided as you will need all the energy for the hike.
Other Important Objective Information : During the winter months, the tickets need to be pre-booked at least a month in advance as the trail only opens on weekends. The hike is very steep, hence wearing sturdy hiking footwear is essential as you will be denied permission otherwise. Along with this, do not forget to carry sufficient drinking water and a fully charged mobile phone on the hike. Children below the age of 8 are not allowed and anybody below the age of 18 needs to be accompanied by an adult. You must start to depart by 2:00 PM maximum.
