Muang La is an idyllic town on the banks of the Nam Pak River close to Oudomxay town in northern Laos. It is known for beautiful natural hot springs with rolling hills around, along with scenic and traditional villages. It has become of the secluded towns for tourists visiting Oudomxay to take a day trip or stay for more days amidst nature.

Activities in Muang La

The natural hot springs surrounded by rice and paddy farms is the top attraction in Muang La. You can relax your body while admiring the beauty around you to soothe your mind. The best part is that entry is free.

Wat Pha Singkham - It is a sacred pilgrimage site for Laotians who worship the sacred statue of Buddha, Pra Singkham, which is more than 400 years old. Its lovely location in Tai Lü village, which is at the confluence of Nam La and Nam Phak also makes it worth visiting.  

Visit the ethnic communities - The villages around Muang La are home to ethnic communities of Khmu, Akha, Ikhos and Hmong, who welcome visitors. You can hike to these villages or cycle or go by renting a motorbike passing through green fields.

Best time to visit

The best time to visit Muang La is from October to March. The weather is excellent and pleasant to be outdoors. The scenery is beautiful post monsoons during this time, making it ideal for enjoying.

Tips

  • There are one or two ATMs in working condition most of the time. It is better to carry sufficient cash as most of the transactions happen through money.
  • Also, the areas around villages have limited options for food and drinks, although there are small eateries run by the locals. So carry your snacks and water. There are no public toilets too.
  • Accommodation options are limited in the town and can get booked during the peak season. It is recommended to book hotels and guesthouses in advance.
  • Carry sunscreen, an umbrella, sunglasses, a hat for the sun and raincoats as well. Also, it is recommended to wear good walking shoes for walking around steep, slippery areas.
