Grandmaster Palace Courtyard

Grandmaster Palace Courtyard, Valletta Overview

Grandmaster's Palace in Valletta, Malta, features two notable courtyards: Neptune's Courtyard and Prince Alfred's Courtyard. Neptune's Courtyard is distinguished by the prominent statue of Neptune, the Roman god of the sea; while Prince Alfred's Courtyard is notable for its clock tower, featuring the Moors Clock along with three additional dials.

The statue of Neptune in Neptune Courtyard was installed during the British period between 1858 and 1864 under Governor John Gaspard Le Marchant. The courtyard also houses escutcheons bearing the coats of arms of various Grand Masters of the Order, which were relocated here in the 19th century for preservation.

The clock on the clock tower of Prince Alfred's Courtyard, which Gaetano Vella designed, was inaugurated on June 11, 1745, and later modified by Michelangelo Sapiano in 1894. Local tradition suggests that the clock was originally brought from Rhodes when the Order arrived in Malta in 1530.
