Siege Bell War Memorial

Siege Bell War Memorial, Valletta Overview

Siege Bell War Memorial is a prominent monument, situated on the lower part of St. Christopher's Bastion, overlooking the Grand Harbour. Erected in 1992, it commemorates the over 7,000 individuals who lost their lives during the relentless bombings of Malta in World War II. Tourists visit this site not only to honor the fallen but also to appreciate its historical significance and to enjoy panoramic views of the harbor and surrounding fortifications.

Designed by British artist Michael Sandle, the memorial was inaugurated on May 29, 1992, marking the 50th anniversary of Malta receiving the George Cross for bravery during the siege from 1940 to 1942. The structure features a large bronze bell, considered the largest in Malta, housed within a neoclassical limestone belfry. The bell tolls daily at noon in honor of the fallen. In front of the bell, there is a bronze sculpture symbolizing the burial at sea of the unknown soldier, adding a poignant touch to the site.
