The Venetian Arsenal, or Arsenale di Venezia, is a complex of armouries and an old shipyard in Venice. There are many time-worn storehouses, docks and other artefacts here. These can only be seen during Venice Biennale, a cultural exhibition, as the arsenal is closed except during this period.
The Arsenal has been present since the 8th century, but the present-day establishment was completed in the 12th century under the Doge Ordelafo Faliero. Over the course of the industrial revolution, it underwent a lot of expansion spanning over 24 hectares. However, the shipyard became too small for modern-day ships and is no longer in use now. The Arsenale only opens during the Biennale exhibition. There is also a nearby naval museum open year-round except Sundays and holidays.
