Bogyoke Aung San Market is a local bazaar located in Pabedan area in the city centre of Yangon in Myanmar. It is one of the most ancient markets in Myanmar consisting of over 2000 shops, which happens in a colonial building lined with cobbled streets. It is one of the major tourist attractions for people visiting Yangon to shop for antiques, souvenirs, rare artefacts and precious stones.

The building exhibits European colonial architecture and is divided into many floors. Cobbled streets are lined up with shops on both sides. Broad stairs at two ends lead to the upper floors. The ground floor and the first floor consists of antique shops. These floors are famous as the black currency market, where you can exchange foreign currency with jewel merchants. There are shops selling postage stamps, old coins, and medals. 

The middle section has jewellery shops selling precious stones like the Burmese jade, rubies, gold, diamond and hand-made silver jewels. The other portion of this area houses art galleries, Burmese handicraft shops, tattoos and clothes stores. Check for Myanmar handicrafts, homeware accessories, handwoven traditional cotton and silk clothes, accessories such as scarves, caps and bags. Also, you can buy the hand-made textiles produced by  hill-tribes of Chin state including embroidered blankets and shawls.

The new wing of the market have shops that sell medicine, clothes and foreign goods. There is a section for local food shops, where you can try fruit juices and BBQ. Fried noodles, vermicelli dishes and smoothies are famous. If you want to get adventurous, you can try boiled and fried intestines, ears and tongues of pigs.

Bogyoke Aung San Market History & Significance

Bogyoke Aung San Market, formerly known as Scott Market, was constructed during the British rule in 1926 to provide a centralized complex for local and foreign trade operations. After Burma became independent in 1948, it was renamed after Aung San, the Governor-General of Bogyoke.

Renovations were made to select parts in the 1990s, including the addition of a new section. It is one of the heritage sites in Yangon city.
