Inya Lake, Yangon Overview

Inya is an artificial lake located in the city of Yangon in Myanmar. It is the largest lake in Yangon and is one of the famous spots for locals who picnic in large numbers during the holidays and weekends. Also known as Victoria Lake, it is one of the worth-visiting attractions for tourists visiting Yangon to take a stroll, boat trip and enjoying the views of the sunset along the lake.

Inya Lake History & Significance

Inya Lake was built in 1882 during the British rule and was the primary source of water supply to the people of the city. It was constructed to draw water formed during the monsoon season in the creeks surrounding the nearby hills. A series of pipes also provide water to  Kandawgyi Lake in the downtown. These two lakes acted as main sources of water distributed among the localities. Important meetings, political rallies and protests have been held in the lake in the past.

Today, the neighbourhoods surrounding the lake is home to the elite in the town. Many restaurants and cafes offer good food and excellent views of the lake during the sunset. It takes about 2 hours to walk along the entire stretch of the lake. There are two entrances, and one of them leads to temporary exhibitions that consist of many arcade and adventure games.
