Kuza Caves, Zanzibar Overview

Kuza Caves in Jambiani on Zanzibar's southeastern coast are natural limestone formations with a rich history. It is a 50-meter round sinkhole shaped over 250,000 years by rainwater on soft limestone. The cave has a 3-meter-deep freshwater pool with clear water, and you can explore it by crossing a small bridge and descending a few stairs. Visitors can regularly visit the Kuza Cave Culture Centre for a guided tour and a brief but informative lecture about the cave.

Used for rituals and gatherings, the cave’s water is believed to have healing properties. The turquoise waters of the cave are known as 'wish water,' and the cave's top serves as a cultural hub for activities like live music, cooking classes, and crafts. Locally named Panga na Maji (Cave with Water), the Kuza Caves are seen as a sacred place to connect with nature or the Spirit of the World, embodying the Swahili concept of Kuza, meaning birth or growth. Half of the proceeds go toward supporting educational programs in the village.
