It used to be a dispensary in the early 20th century and now serves as a symbol of the city's diverse architecture. Known as the Stone 'Town Cultural Centre,' the Old Dispensary is a beautifully decorated three-story structure in Stone Town. History of Old Dispensary

The Old Dispensary's story began in 1887 when Tharia Topan, a wealthy Ismaili Indian, commissioned its construction to honour Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee. Originally meant as a charitable hospital, it faced delays and was completed in 1894 by a new owner after Topan's death. In 1900, Haji Nasser Nurmohamed, a prominent Indian merchant, bought it and turned the ground floor into a dispensary while using the upper floors as apartments.

After the 1964 Zanzibar Revolution, the government took over the Old Dispensary, and it fell into disuse. In 1990, as part of Stone Town's historical building renovation, the Aga Khan Trust for Culture restored it. The project was finished in April 1994.
