In Georgia, the new year is celebrated twice. The first celebration takes place on 1st January as per the Gregorian calendar and the second new year day falls on the 14th January as per the Julian calendar. It is also known as “Old New Year”.

Old New Year

Once, the Gregorian New Year celebrations are done with, Georgia celebrates the “Old New Year” which falls on January 14th according to the Julian calendar. The Old New Year is marked with gatherings of friends and family, festive meals featuring traditional Georgian dishes like satsivi and khachapuri, and joyful toasts with local wines and cha-cha. Homes and public spaces are adorned with lights and decorations, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.

New Year's Eve in Georgia revolves around the Supra, a traditional Georgian feast characterized by an abundance of food, wine, and heartfelt toasts. Families and friends gather around a lavishly laid table, where dishes like Khachapuri (cheese-filled bread) and Mtsvadi (grilled meats) are served. The Tamada who is the toastmaster at the feast gives speech and families greet each other at 12 AM. The new year festivities go on till the morning.

In cities like Tbilisi and Batumi, crowds gather in squares and along riverbanks to count down the final moments of the year. People celebrate with live music performances, dancing, and spectacular fireworks lighting up the sky at midnight. The fireworks display over Tbilisi's iconic landmarks, such as the Narikala Fortress and the Peace Bridge are a sight to behold.
