The Haji Bektash Veli Complex, an important Alevi Islamic cultural monument, is situated in the town of Hacıbektaş in Nevşehir province. This historical site, established in the 13th century, served as a teqe (dervish lodge) for Haji Bektash Veli, a prominent Sufi saint and philosopher. It is renowned for its vibrant cultural festivals, particularly in August.
Following Haji Bektash Veli's death in 1271, his mausoleum was constructed here, transforming the complex into a significant spiritual and cultural center. It consists of several courtyards and buildings, each with unique historical and architectural features. First courtyard (Nadar Courtyard) includes a notable fountain adorned with Solomon's seal. Second courtyard (Dervish Lodge Courtyard) is central to the complex and houses the lion statue fountain, guesthouses, storerooms, and a mosque. It also features shrines of Bektashi elders, including the tomb of Balım Sultan, who formalized Bektashi practices in the 15th century. Third courtyard contains the mausoleum of Haji Bektash Veli, surrounded by a meditation room, semah hall, and other significant structures. The semah hall is used for the ritual dance, Semah, an important cultural and religious practice among Alevis and Bektashis.
