Splantzia, Chania Overview

The Turkish quarter or Splantzia is a historic neighborhood located around Splantzia Square or 1821 Square, in the southern part of the Old Venetian Harbor. It is also known for its picturesque streets and alleys, perfect for leisurely strolls. One particularly interesting street is Sifaka Street, also known as "ta macheradika" (the knife makers) and Splantzia Square itself.

Splantzia Square itself. It's a charming little square with big plane trees providing shade, making it a perfect spot to relax after exploring Chania city. Surrounding the square are cozy cafes and taverns, offering a taste of local cuisine and a chance to soak in the lively atmosphere.

Two prominent churches can be found around Splantzia Square. The first is Agios Nikolaos (St. Nicholas) church, which used to be a Dominican monastery during the Venetian era and later converted into a mosque during the Ottoman occupation. The other is the Venetian St. Rocco church, built in the early 17th century, now occasionally hosting art exhibitions.

To reach the Turkish quarter, you can start your walk from Daskalogiannis Street, which passes through the heart of the neighborhood.
