Formerly also known as the Hellenic Museum and Cultural Center, The National Hellenic Museum of Chicago was founded in 1983 and opened to the public in 1992. The museum was built to promote and understand the traditions and culture of ancient and contemporary Greece with a focus on the Greek-American immigrant experience.
It houses the largest collection of Greek-American artifacts in the world with 17,000 artifacts that span thousands of years. The museum’s collection includes textiles, traditional costumes, and musical instruments, as well as original photographs. It also has a library- with over 10,000 books, letters, documents, and even rare manuscripts of the 17th and 18th centuries.
