Situated on the south side of the Art Institute of Chicago, the South Garden is built on top of a public garage. Designed by Dan Kiley, the garden is designed with a minimalistic approach. Nestled in the garden, is a sculptor by Lorado Taft called the Fountain of the lakes, fronted by a rectangular pool that is flanked by sixteen hawthorn trees.
The raised planters containing the hawthorn trees also provide places to sit for the visitors. Moving inward from Michigan avenue, two raided beds with three rows of honey locust trees, privet, and flowering bulbs create the entry of the park. The planting and the hardscape of the garden make it a well-loved garden by the visitors.
