The Holy Monastery of Saint John the Theologian is a prominent Greek Orthodox monastery located in Chora on the island of Patmos. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the monastery is still active and only a portion of it is open to the public. It is surrounded by heavy fortifications, including tall walls and towers. There is a museum onsite with a rich collection of manuscripts and relics, including the skull of Saint Thomas the Apostle.

The monastery complex includes the Katholikón, the main church built in the Byzantine style, characterized by its domed cross-in-square design. Inside, the Katholikón, the chapel, boasts a marble opus sectile floor and medieval frescoes and two-storied arcade. can explore the entrance courtyard, a chapel adorned with frescoes, and the library established by Christodoulos, which houses an extensive collection of manuscripts and historical documents.

How to Reach

There is no direct ferry to Patmos from Faliraki. A ferry costing EUR 54 can be taken from Rhodes haorbour, instead.
