History of Ba Dinh Square

Ba Dinh Square is named after the Ba Dinh Uprising which occurred in Vietnam between 1886 and 1887 to oppose and rebel against the French occupation. On September 2, 1945, it was at Ba Dinh Square that President Ho Chi Minh read the Proclamation of Independence of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam after which Vietnam became a free country. After the death of Ho Chi Minh 24 years later, a granite mausoleum was built here to display his body and till date, it is the most visited place by travellers.

Ba Dinh Square is a popular place among the locals as well as travellers to come to take a stroll or exercise. It is also a favourite gathering place where people meet each other and hang out. Flag raising and lowering ceremony: Every morning at 6:00 AM and every night at 9:00 PM, a flag-raising ceremony and lowering ceremony takes place at Ba Dinh Square. The ceremony also includes an orchestra performing the national anthem by impeccably dressed soldiers in white uniforms. This ceremony succeeds in invoking patriotic feelings in each and every person and is a must-visit event.

How To Reach Ba Dinh Square

Ba Dinh Square is located adjacent to the Ho Chi Minh Complex in Ba Dinh District. You can reach Ba Dinh Square easily by either hiring a car from any part of Hanoi. A number of buses run at regular intervals from different parts of Hanoi to Le Hong Phong Road from where Ba Dinh Square is located at a walkable distance of 2 minutes.
