The Anayirankal Dam is located right in between a verdant carpet of tea plantations and a thicket of evergreen forests. It is one of the largest earthen dams and was completed in the 1960s. It is also one of the earliest dams made with concrete.
Elephant Spotting:- Because of the dam's close proximity to the evergreen forests, it is also a major source of water for the wildlife that houses the forests. As a result, one is bound to witness herds of elephants on the banks of the Anayirankal as they arrive to take a sip from the Periyar river.
Bird-Watching:- The place also protects some rare species of birds, and hence is also a bird-lover’s paradise.
Tea Plantations:- The many tea plantations that surround the dam are owned and managed by the Tata Tea Group.
Boating:- An important reason why tourists flock in numbers at this dam is because of the exciting and fun-filled activities organised at this place, the major one being boating.
As part of the Anayirankal Hydel Tourism Project, boating was introduced to the place, and it quickly became a tourist-favourite, which also encouraged further development of the dam and its surrounding areas. The Kerala Hydel Tourism Center promotes water-based tourism, while also conserving the ecology of the area.
