Also known as Syra, Syros is located in the centre of the cyclades island, 144 kms in the south east end of Athens. The island is a pure Greek bliss with lesser tourists, sophisticated landscape, exciting beaches and a great historical and cultural significance. The beaches are well managed with sunbeds and umbrellas and no water sports centres.
Home to Rembetiko music, Syros is a hub of art and architecture and a perfect budget family vacation island. Some of the major attractions on Syros are Apollon theatre and Markos Vamvakaris Museum, apart from exploring the narrow picturesque lanes of Ano Syros and the neoclassical beauty of Ermoupoli. Due to the size of the island, things to do are limited. However, walking through the architecturally perfect streets of Ermaoupoli and cycling to beaches and villages are two of the most popular activities in Syros.
The small island of Syros can be divided into two main parts- The lower town, Ano Syros, with an orthodox tradition and the upper, Ermoupolis. Ano Syros is a Venetian-influenced mediaeval settlement with narrow streets boasting marble steps and cute houses with coloured doors. Ermoupolis, also the capital of the Cyclades, boasts neo-classical buildings, white houses and old mansions cascading down to the coast. Other main villages are Foinikas, Galissas, Pagos, Kini, Manna, and Poseidonia.
