Kukeldash Madrasah, Tashkent Overview

Kukeldash Madrasah, located on a high hill in Chorsu Square is a historic Islamic educational institution that stands as a testament to the rich cultural and architectural heritage of the region. Built in the 16th century the madrasah served as a center for religious studies. It was originally built with baked bricks, following the 16th-century architecture. Today, the madrasah stands as a functioning religious institute with facilities like classrooms, computer rooms, a calligraphy hall, a library, a gym, a cafeteria, and a dormitory. It is open to the public throughout the year.

The repeated repairs and restoration have changed the appearance of the building while still preserving the original architecture like a traditional courtyard surrounded by two-storied loggias, and two-floor balconies with corner towers known as guldasta. The walls and ceilings are adorned with intricate tilework and geometric patterns. The main entrance of Kukeldash Madrasah reaches a height of 20 meters and is meticulously restored with colorful traditional paintings. The windows are adorned with lattice bars, featuring engravings of the sacred names of Allah and Prophet Muhammad. Muslims can also pray at the Dzuma Mosque situated in the area.
