Guimar pyramids, Tenerife Overview

The Pyramids of Guimar are a fascinating complex of six stepped structures located in the town of Guimar on the island's eastern coast. Believed to date back to the 19th century, these pyramids are surrounded by myths connecting them to ancient civilizations, though they are likely agricultural terraces. The site features an ethnographic park with exhibits on global pyramids, botanical gardens, and Thor Heyerdahl’s theories about pre-Columbian transoceanic contact.

The pyramids of Guimar refer to the step pyramids in the island of Tenerife which look like agricultural stone terraces that were built in the 19th century from lava stone. These were said to be common throughout the Canary Islands. But Dr. Heyerdahl, a Norwegian ethnographer, said that these were neither terraces nor a pile of stoners. These are pyramids that have been built pain stakingly and are constructed according to some principles common in Peru, Mexico and Mesopotamia. The Ethnographic Park at Guimar Pyramids gives you the possibility to visit these interesting and rare structures and it also gives a dimension to those theories relating to the possible diffusion of ancient civilisations. Apart from these six step pyramids, the park is also home to the museum of Casa Chacona where there is a life size replica of Dr. Heyerdahl's boat and other ceramic figures.
