Zagreb Cathedral, Zagreb Overview

Zagreb Cathedral, located on Kaptol Square in the heart of Zagreb, is a stunning example of Gothic architecture and the tallest building in Croatia. Originally built in 1093 and later reconstructed after an earthquake in 1880, it is known for its twin spires and intricate detailing. The cathedral houses historical treasures, including a 13th-century fresco and a Baroque pulpit, making it a cultural and architectural landmark. Its surrounding fortifications, added in the 16th century, further enhance its historical significance.

Its ground plan and cross-ribbed arches inside the three polygonal apses adorned with narrow windows are symbolic of French architecture. A few modern architectural and sculptural inclusions involve German and Czech influences. The cathedral is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary and its construction finished in 1217 and was consecrated by King Andrew II (1205-1235). Over the centuries it was destroyed by fire, war and earthquakes and reconstructed several times with various new inventories and design influences adorning its walls and halls. Even still construction works keep certain areas closed for tourists but still it is the place to be (for the simple reason that it is unmissable!) if you’re ever in Zagreb.
