Can I take my car to Sikkim?

Yes, you can take your own car to travel to Sikkim or you can get a self-drive car too, especially if you are visiting any of the unprotected areas. However, if you are planning on entering any of the protected areas which are closer to the border like Nathula Pass or Tsomgo Lake, you will need to rent a Sikkim registered vehicle from a tour operator; it must be an SUV like Bolero, Innova or Scorpio. Keep in mind to procure the necessary permits to enter these areas.

Do you need permits to visit some restricted areas?

Sikkim has various restricted zones requiring entry licenses due to its proximity to international boundaries. Foreigners must get Restricted-Area Permits to travel beyond Singhik and up the Lachung and Lachen valleys in North Sikkim. To enter any restricted zone, Indian citizens do not require a RAP.

Can you go to Sikkim by train?

Sikkim does not have a direct railway connection, and there is no railway station within the state. The nearest major railway station is New Jalpaiguri (NJP) in the state of West Bengal. To reach Sikkim by train, you would typically need to take a train to New Jalpaiguri and then continue your journey to Sikkim by road. Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim, is about 120 kilometers (75 miles) from NJP, and you can hire a taxi or use other modes of transportation to reach there.

Is there snowfall in Sikkim?
