How to Apply an Indian e-Visa from Malaysia?
Eligibility for e-Visa- International travelers holding a Pakistani passport or of Pakistani origin should apply for a regular visa at an Indian mission.
- e-Visas are not available to diplomatic/official passport holders or laissez-passer travel document holders.
- Each individual must have a separate passport; e-Visas are not available to those endorsed on a parent's or spouse's passport.
- e-Visas are not available to international travel document holders other than passport holders.
Step 1: Gather Required Documents
Prepare the necessary documents before starting your application. The common documents required for an Indian e-Visa include:- A scanned copy of your passport’s bio page (must have at least six months validity from the date of arrival in India and two blank pages).
- A recent passport-sized photograph with a white background.
Step 2: Fill Out the Online Application Form
- Visit the official Indian e-Visa application portal: Indian e-Visa Application.
- Select the appropriate e-Visa category and click on "Apply here for e-Visa."
- Complete the online application form with accurate details. Ensure all information matches the details in your passport.
- Upload the required documents (passport copy, photograph, and any additional documents depending on your e-Visa type).
Step 3: Pay the Visa Fee
After completing the application form and uploading the necessary documents, proceed to pay the e-Visa fee online using a credit or debit card. Ensure you receive a payment receipt, which will be required for tracking your application.e-Visa Types and Fees for Malaysian:
- 30-day e-Visa: April to June: $10 USD
- 30-day e-Visa: July to March: $25 USD
- 1-year e-Visa: $40 USD
- 5-year e-Visa: $80 USD
Step 4: Submit the Application
Once the payment is successful, review your application for any errors. Submit the application and note the application ID for future reference. You will receive an acknowledgment email confirming the submission of your application.Step 5: Track Your Application
You can track the status of your e-Visa application using the application ID provided at the time of submission. Visit the Indian e-Visa Status Enquiry page and enter your application ID and passport number to check the status.Step 6: Receive Your e-Visa
If your application is approved, you will receive an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) via email. This document will allow you to travel to India. Print a copy of the ETA and carry it with you when you travel.Upon arrival in India, present your printed ETA at the immigration counter. The immigration officers will verify your ETA and stamp your passport with the actual visa.
Important Notes
- Validity: The e-Visa is valid from the date of issue, not from the date of entry into India.
- Duration: Ensure you apply for the appropriate e-Visa type based on the duration and purpose of your visit. Tourist e-Visas are generally valid for 60 days with double entry, while other categories may have different validity periods.
- Non-extendable: e-Visas are non-extendable and non-convertible.
- Funds & Flight Tickets: International travelers should have a return ticket or an onward journey ticket, along with sufficient funds for their stay in India.
How to Apply Indian Visa from Malaysia in Person?
Step 1: Complete the Application Form
Online Form: Fill out the application form electronically at Indian Visa Online. The form cannot be handwritten.Signature: Sign the form at two places: below the photograph and on the last page. Ensure the signature matches the one in your passport.
Photographs: Attach two recent photographs (2” x 2” with a white background). Here's a detailed photo uploading process.
Passport and IC Copy: Submit a copy of your passport and IC (Identity Card).
Additional Requirements:
- Provide detailed addresses of referees in Malaysia and India.
- Applicants born in China or Pakistan, or descendants of Pakistani origin, must fill out a non-residential form.
- Journalists must apply for a Journalist visa, regardless of the purpose of travel.
- For minors, include the birth certificate and copies of the parents' passports.
Step 2: Submit the Application at the Indian Embassy in Malaysia
Biometric Registration: Applicants must be present during submission for biometric registration. Children below 12 years old and adults above 70 are exempted but can have their applications submitted by a representative.Book an Appointment: Schedule your appointment online at Appointment Booking.
Submission Timing: Submit your application between 09:00 AM to 2:00 PM on all working days.
Submission Location: Submit your application at the designated Indian Visa Application Centres (IVAC) in Malaysia.
Step 3: Visa Fees Payment

Step 4: Wait for Processing - Processing Time for Indian Visa from Malaysia
Malaysian Nationals: Typically, the visa processing time is 3 working days.Non-Malaysian Nationals: The processing time includes at least 5 working days for visa approval by the High Commission, followed by 3 working days for visa stamping.
Visa Validity: The validity of an Indian visa begins on the date it is issued, not on the date you travel to India. Therefore, applicants should ensure they apply for a visa with the appropriate validity period.
Note: It is advisable not to book flight tickets before obtaining the visa due to the uncertain processing time.
Step 5: Collection of Visa
Once your visa is approved, you will be notified, and you can collect your passport from the designated IVAC or opt for courier services if available.Collection of Documents:
Collect your documents between 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM on all working days.
Collection of more than one document belonging to the same applicant is permissible.
IVACs are closed on Saturday and Sunday and public holidays observed by the High Commission of India.
The applicant should carry his/her Passport / ID card at the time of visiting the High Commission of India.
