Traveling to India is like exploring a treasure trove of ancient traditions, busy cities, and stunning sights. But before you set off on your adventure, it's important to understand what you need to do to get there smoothly. This guide is like a map, showing you the way through the rules and requirements for visiting India. From getting your visa sorted to staying healthy, we'll help you understand everything you need to know before you go. So, let's get started on your journey to India, where amazing experiences await!

India Visa Requirements

Most travelers require a visa to enter India.  E-visa is available for citizens of over 160 countries issued for tourism, business, medical, and conference purposes. It can be applied for online and is valid for 60 days from the date of arrival. For stays longer than 60 days or for purposes not covered by the e-Visa, travelers must apply for a regular visa at an Indian consulate or embassy. Restricted Entry
  • Pakistani Origin: If the applicant or either of their parents or grandparents (paternal or maternal) was born in, or was permanently resident in Pakistan.
  • Diplomatic/Official Passports: Holders of Diplomatic or Official passports.
  • UN and International Travel Documents: Holders of UNLP (UN Passport) and other international travel documents, such as those issued by INTERPOL.
Passport Validity Requirements
  • Ensure your passport remains valid for at least six months beyond your planned entry date into India.
  • Your passport should have at least two blank pages for the visa.
  • Check with your travel provider to confirm your passport and other travel documents meet requirements.
  • Renew your passport if needed.
  • Entry may be denied without a valid travel document or if using a reported lost or stolen passport.

Customs and Immigration

Entry Declaration:Travelers must complete an arrival card and a customs declaration form.
Declare any items that exceed the duty-free allowance, including valuable items like electronics, jewelry, and foreign currency.

Duty-Free Allowance:
  • Alcohol: Up to 2 liters of alcohol.
  • Tobacco: 100 cigarettes, 25 cigars, or 125 grams of tobacco.
  • Other goods: Up to a total value of INR 15,000.
Restricted and Prohibited Items:
  • Restricted items: Satellite phones, certain high-value electronics, plants, and seeds.
  • Prohibited items: Narcotics, psychotropic substances, and counterfeit goods.
Bringing Money into India
  • Follow Reserve Bank of India guidelines for bringing Indian rupees into the country.
  • Visitors can bring cash, travelers' cheques, or a bank card.
  • Exchange or withdraw rupees once in India.
  • Declare amounts exceeding 5,000 US dollars in notes or 10,000 US dollars in notes and travelers' cheques combined.
Travel Insurance
It is highly recommended to have travel insurance covering medical expenses, trip cancellations, lost luggage, and other unexpected events. Ensure the policy includes coverage for COVID-19-related issues.

Health and Vaccination 

There are two mandatory vaccinations required for visitors entering India. A Yellow Fever vaccination is required for travelers coming from or transiting through countries with a risk of yellow fever transmission. Proof of polio vaccination may be required for travelers from countries with active polio transmission.

COVID-19 Requirements:
As of the latest update, travelers are required to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination or a negative RT-PCR test taken within 72 hours before departure. Regulations may vary, so it's essential to check for the latest updates before traveling.

Recommended Vaccinations:
  • Hepatitis A and B
  • Typhoid
  • Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis (Tdap)
  • Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR)
  • Rabies (for extended stays or travel to rural areas)
  • Influenza

Local Laws and Regulations

  • Identification: Carry a copy of your passport and visa at all times. Local authorities may require identification.
  • Respect Local Customs: Dress modestly, especially when visiting religious sites. Be mindful of local customs and traditions.
  • Photography: Photography is restricted in certain areas, such as military installations and airports. Always seek permission before photographing people, especially in rural areas.
  • Currency and Money Matters: The official currency is the Indian Rupee (INR). Major cities and tourist areas have ATMs and currency exchange services. Credit and Debit Cards are widely accepted in urban areas, hotels, and restaurants. However, cash is preferred in rural areas and for small transactions.
  • Banking Hours: Typically from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday to Friday, and until 1:00 PM on Saturdays.

Rail Travel: India's extensive railway network is one of the largest in the world. Trains connect major cities and remote regions, offering various classes of travel to suit different budgets and preferences. Booking train tickets in advance is advisable, especially during peak travel seasons.
Road Travel: India's roadways are bustling with activity, with an extensive network of highways and local roads. Travelers can opt for buses, taxis, or auto-rickshaws to navigate within cities and between destinations. Hiring a car with a driver is also a popular option for those seeking more flexibility and convenience. 
Air Travel: Domestic flights connect major cities across India, offering a convenient and time-saving mode of transportation for long-distance travel. Several airlines operate regular flights between key destinations, providing options for both budget and premium travelers.
Ride-Sharing Options: Uber & Ola are popular ride-sharing platforms in India that operates across all major cities and hubs. They offer a range of transportation options including cabs, auto-rickshaws, and bike taxis.Travelers can book a ride through the app and track their driver's location, you can also pay online seamlessly. Ola also provides convenient transportation solutions for both local commutes and inter-city travel. 

Exit Formalities in India

Upon departure from India, you will go through immigration where officials will verify your entry date into the country. If you lack an entry stamp, perhaps due to a newly issued passport, you must apply for a special exit visa before your departure. This process can be completed online through the e-FRRO portal, which is part of the Indian Foreigners Registration Office. Depending on the complexity of your application, the processing time can range from five to fifteen working days. It's crucial to factor in this timeframe when planning your departure and booking flights.
