The Shri Yellamma Pochamma Temple, located in Balkampet, Hyderabad, is a historical and spiritual landmark with a rich heritage spanning over 700 years. Its origins trace back to the 15th century when a rock bearing the sculpture of the goddess was discovered 10 feet underground during a well-digging excavation. The immovable idol was seen as a divine sign, leading to the construction of the temple on the same spot. Over centuries, the temple has undergone several renovations, with the current structure established in 1919.
The temple's main deity, Yellamma, is believed to be Swayambhu, meaning self-manifested, not installed by human hands. Positioned 10 feet below ground level, the goddess is known as Jala Durga, "the goddess in water," due to the continuous natural springs that flow around the idol. The temple also houses a shrine for Goddess Pochamma, located on the southern side of the main complex. An Akhand Jyothi, an eternal holy flame, burns perpetually, symbolizing the divine presence.
Two major festivals celebrated at the temple are Ammavari Kalyanam and Bonalu, which draw thousands of devotees annually. Ammavari Kalyanam is the celestial wedding of Goddess Yellamma, while Bonalu, a regional festival, involves offerings of food and prayers to the goddess. Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays are considered particularly auspicious for worship, with devotees thronging to seek blessings for health, prosperity, and protection.
This temple remains a powerful symbol of faith and a testament to Hyderabad's rich cultural and religious heritage.
