Piazza del Plebiscito, a large, fully pedestrian, public square in Naples is home to some of the iconic buildings. It’s also a cultural and artistic hotspot, hosting numerous cultural concerts and events year-round. It is named after the 1860 plebiscite that brought Naples under the Italian kingdom.
The structures were mostly built in the initial half of the 19th century with volcanic rocks from Vesuvius. Two major buildings welcoming you to the square include the excellent San Francesco di Paola Basilica which is a dominating neoclassical structure behind a long semi-circular columned gallery and one of Naples’ largest churches. It is thus more peaceful than the rest of Naples and strolling through its street one can also visit the nearby attractions of Via Toledo, the Galeria Umberto I, Castel dell’Ovo and the Real Teatro di San Carlo. Right across the square rests the Royal Palace of Naples, a well-preserved gorgeous emblem of the city. The Piazza del Plebiscito is a full-pedestrian square ever since 1994.
Other important objective information : 1. The Piazza del Plebiscito is situated near the Gulf of Naples, in the city’s southern sector and can be reached via metro and buses that ply regularly.
2. Most of the above-mentioned attractions are within a 1-kilometre radius and easily accessible on foot.
