Situated in the province of East Java, the Monumen Gubernur Suryo is located around a small park. The statue was constructed in honour of the first governor, and a national hero, of East Java, Governor Soerjo. It is quite stunning at night when illuminated. You will come across the statue many times while on touring the city as it is located in the city centre.
The governor was kidnapped by rebel Communist forces in the year 1948 and was murdered thereafter. The monument was erected in 1975 to memorialize him. A park that contains more than 20 different types of plants has also been built around the monument. The park's facilities include a pavilion, an information room, a mosque, and a playground for the children.
