The Tomb of Dr Soetomo is one of the cultural heritages of Surabaya. It was built to honour Soetomo, a doctor, a politician, and a national hero of Indonesia. He is known to have played a central role in the battle of Surabaya and was also known for his powerful and emotion-inducing speeches. Dr Soetomo was instrumental in the role he played in inciting a sense of patriotism amongst the Indonesian youth using public radio.
During the Battle of Surabaya, when colonial forces attacked the metropolis, Soetomo rallied forces and troops with his fiery and impassioned speeches and galvanized the country. His call to arms for the youth of the nation spurred revolutionary thoughts and his tomb was memorialized to honour the contributions the military leader made to Indonesia's freedom struggle.
